They are in pretty good estate condition, although there is some spotting to the silver which may or may not come off with a thorough polishing. One of the glass open salts has a tiny chip in the rim. In addition this set has the ordinary patina of old tarnish and fine scratches to be expected from silver with age and use.     Description

    Offered for sale by Caspar’s Place is
    a set of 6 Japanese sterling silver
    boxes or
    condiment caddies by an unknown maker.  Each box has an articulating or moveable handle and 4 little angular feet.  Each has two holes in the top:  the smaller one holds a tiny silver pepper shaker with a screw on top; the larger one holds a glass open salt with a silver salt spoon.
    There is no maker’s mark on any of the pieces in this set.  Each box is marked on the bottom simply with “STERLING.”  There is no numerical purity mark, although Japanese silver marked with “Sterling” is often made with a higher silver content than the .925 of traditional sterling.  The pepper shakers and salt spoons are not marked at all as to purity, but they acid test as silver.

    The set combined (excluding the glass open salts) weighs approximately 7.54 troy ounces.  The boxes weigh 5.82; the pepper shakers weigh 1.315 troy ounces; and the spoons weigh 0.34 troy ounces.   Each box is roughly 2.125” long by 1.25” wide by 1.0” deep (excluding the moveable handles).  Each glass open salt is 0.875” in diameter.  Each pepper shaker is 1.5” tall and 0.625” in diameter.  The spoons are 2.25” long.
