Antique French Sterling Silver Salt Cellars and Spoons,Art Nouveau
,
Tulips, Lily of the Valley, Cobalt Blue Liners, 4
pcs
T
hese magnificent antique French sterling silver salt cellars and spoons from the first years of the 20th century are beautifully designed in the
Art Nouveau
Style. The salt cellars are crafted in a cutwork pattern with tulips and flowing lines typical of the
Art Nouveau
period. They are highlighted by cobalt blue glass liners whose upper edge are shaped to harmoniously follow the undulating shape of the cellar. Two liners have a slightly different size and shape than the two others. The handles of the spoons are embellished with a motif of lily of the valley and the upper parts have a scalloped outside edge. These salt cellars and spoons bear the French “
Minerve
Premier
Titre
” hallmark, indicating the highest quality of French sterling silver (950/1000), used in Paris since 1838. The
Minerve
Premier
Titre
is the guarantee that the sterling is at least 95% silver. The cellars also bear the maker’s mark of
Joseph
Crossard
, master silversmith in Paris, located in the rue de Montmorency between 1900 and 1920. The maker’s mark consists of the initials “J” and “C” surrounding the image of a bishop’s
crozier
(Crosse
d’évêque
) and the letters “
ARD
”.
Crozier
, “
crosse
” in French, plus the letters “
ARD
” make up the name
Crossard
. The spoons bear the maker’s mark consisting of the letters “E” and “N” surrounding the image of an oil can (“burette”) for
Emile
Noiret
, master silversmith, located in the rue du Petit-
Thouars
in Paris between 1901 and 1905. This set is in very good condition with the exception of very tiny chips, barely visible, on the edges of the liners, a chip on the inside upper edge of one liner and slight marks of corrosion from salt on the upper parts of the spoons, all due to great age and normal use. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page. These very beautiful salt cellars will be a prestigious addition to your table setting or your collection.
