Hallmarks
Silver hallmarks inthe UK date back to the medieval period and the practice of applying them as aguarantee of the purity of the precious metal represents Britain’s oldest formof consumer protection.
Most British and Irish silver carries a number of stampsindicating not just the standard or purity mark (typically the lion passant)but also the initials of the maker, a date letter and the place of assay.
L.LTD is a mark of Lanson Ltd, and the combination of theanchor, lion passant and the letter R is the Birmingham 1941 hallmark.
