Fabulous 4pc Sterling Silver Open Salt & Pepper Shaker Set
Presented is a fabulous 4 piece sterling silver salt and pepper set, with spoons. The open salt cellars are English, made in 1937, while the pepper shakers were made or retailed by Ensko in New York. The set is done in a lovely traditional style, with baluster form pepper shakers and hoof feet on the salt cellars. Despite the difference in makers, the set matches perfectly; possibly the shakers were made to match the salts after their import for sale by Enskow, but we can't know for sure. The spoons, which are a marriage, also match wonderfully, done in a handsome Old English or Rounded Antique type of pattern. The pieces are sturdy and well made, with a nice feeling of weight and quality in the hand.
This set is in excellent condition. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
Each of the salt cellars is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the city of London, the date letter B for 1937, and the maker's mark for Ernest Walter Payne. The pepper shakers are stamped Enskow, NY, and sterling. One of the spoons is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head for the city of London, the date letter g for 1902, and the maker's mark for John Charles Lowe. The other spoon is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the city of Sheffield, the date letter g for 1917, and the maker's mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Each salt is about 2 1/2 inches wide and about 1 1/4 inches tall. The spoons are about 2 3/4 inches long. Each shaker is about 4 inches tall.
The total weight for the set is 309 grams or 10.9 regular ounces.
