Description
Check out this phenomenal little set from Kirk Silversmiths. While these are Victorian designs from the early 20th or late 19th century, the company has roots going back to 1815 in Baltimore. The beautifully crafted, ornate silverplate set consists of an open salt cellar in the style of a clawfoot tub with a cobalt blue glass liner. It has a matching lidded piece that hinges closed, also with a glass liner (both of these are ~2.5” long and 1.5” tall). This has been paired with a solid, sterling silver spoon (2.25” long) that has a necklace ring, as they were sometimes worn in the era.
Finally a matching spice shaker with a snug-fitting, pierced lid (3” tall). Each piece has detailed feet and rims with a shell motif in the corners. A real piece of serviceware history and miraculous that the three items remained together.
Condition is excellent across the board. The silver has been freshly polished, leaving some patina to allow the details to pop.The cobalt glass liners show only one small nick, but are otherwise in very nice shape and ready for use. The exterior silverplate is all in excellent condition, with the only note of some rubbing in the wells beneath the glass liners (this is never seen with the glass in place). Pieces are stamped “Kirk”, “EPNS” “Made in England”. The spoon is stamped “sterling”.
