Description
This listing is for a boxed pair of 19th century ENGLISH STERLING SILVER SALT CELLARS accompanied by two sterling salt spoons. These salts are shaped like tiny cauldrons with tripod feet. The top rim on the salts has tiny beading around the edge. All four of the pieces have the same marks, M&W inside a shield (for MAPPIN & WEBB) and three hallmarks below for STERLING, SHEFFIELD and 1896. The salts stand 1-1/4" tall and 1-5/8" across the top. The salt spoons are just under 2" long. The black hard case is excellent inside and out with the exception of the clasp which can no longer grasp the lid as the rim is missing material at the attachment point. The box has still a little note from I think the English dealer with most of the above information. Although I haven't been able to verify this, it also notes the the salts are a design by the famed 19th century independent designer CHRISTOPHER DRESSER. Excellent set.
