Don't Miss This Unique Conversation Piece...!!
This unique piece is a stamped aluminum sensor safety cover that is removed before flight. This felt-lined nose cap was designed to protect sensitive equipment while aircraft are on the ground from accidental damage from handling or weather.... Plus one each of Type 1 B57 Nose Cone with silver disc on the nose and Type 2 nose cone with olive green rubberized coating....
Bought by the previous veteran owner in public surplus auctions held at Kirtland AFB in the early 1990s.....

colored and painted stamped aluminum with two intricate metal screw locking mechanisms and safety chained cotter pins (photos 2, 6, 8, 9, 11,12 and 13).... Wide protective felt lining strip in circumference on inside at wide end(photos 4 and 7). No two of these are exactly alike finish-wise except for red paint and stencils... Some are made of fiberglass - some are made of stamped aluminum (lighter silver-white colored interior and some have painted red interiors, like this one) - all dimensions are the same on both variations. Some have a red interior, possibly painted, some have a plain fiberglass colored interior. Some have a red cushion pad inside the tip and some have a white one.
This nose cover is the stamped aluminum variation.
This uniquely interesting piece is a B57 Type1 and Type 2 sensor nose cones,155mm
diameter
at the base (curious dimensions 6-3/16 inches) by about 7" tall which, after closer inspection and examination of some broken cones at the storage yard, I discovered that these nose cones are made of Bakelite, one of the earliest fully synthetic plastics developed (commercially patented 1907). This nose cone/nose cap was designed to protect sensitive sensor equipment/seeker heads yet allow electronic signals to pass through while in flight and in use...
These Type 1 nose cones date back to the period of 1963 to 1991, They were used to protect the forward instrument package on a B57 "dial-a-yield" thermonuclear gravity bomb (decommissioned since 1991), but allow signals access to instruments located there... don't know what they silver metal disc was for. Primarily this B57 was used to arm tactical fighters and bombers during the height of the Cold War until the end when the Soviet Union collapsed. The US Navy used it as 10 kt depth charge for use against Soviet missile subs or attack subs, and it carried by the P-3 Orion and S-3 Viking. It was flown by the A-4 Skyhawk as a tactical weapon. The "physics package" would vaporize nearly a cubic mile of ocean water along with the target submarine! This is a very unique and rare inert piece of our nuclear weapons history.
Interesting as conversation pieces or you can use them for any purpose you can think up...... Cone head for upcoming Halloween costume perhaps... who knows...
I researched as best I could and have included photos of it on a plane,,,!!!

Mostly near perfectly intact with very few, if any type of issues at all! No discernible dentss in the aluminum cone. Latching mechanisms appear to be totally intact with no looseness apparent (upper right last photo). No identifiable manufacturer's labeling that I could find... VG+ to Fine+ cover with Fine+ overall as far as I can tell.
